General Description: Good structure, fresh, crisp acidity, high alcoholic volume, distinctive citrus aromas, intense minerality | aged wines reveal a more solid structure and increased aromatic complexity, with references to Riesling.

Terroir: Unique in the world: the volcano of Thira, the caldera, the Aegean sea ,Volcanic/porous soil: lava, thiran soil (ash and pumice), complete absence of organic matter

Vineyard: self-rooted, anhydrous vineyard, never affected by phylloxera, 3,500 years old, potentially the world’s oldest vineyard, the majority of stumps are on average 50-100 years old or more. A vineyard that should be considered as a «monument» of world heritage,  the lowest production volumes by acreage in Greece (~300kg/acre).

Winegrowing and winemaking: «Kouloures» (rings) or «Kalathia» (baskets): traditional cultivation technique that involves the wrapping of the stump in a basket shape low into the ground, protecting the grapes from the strong winds and the intense sunlight (vinegrower’s conquest as a result of their collective experience throughout the centuries for the adaptation of viniculture in this unique ecosystem).
Human care:Vinicultural labour and harvest by hand.
«Pezoules»: reshaping of steep, hill-side terrains in stepped form, offering protection from aeolic corrosion of the soil.
The primest harvest of Greece, due at the beginning of August.

Gaia Estate Thalassitis
Gaia Estate Thalassitis

Assyrtiko is perhaps the only Mediterranean variety of grape to flourish under such difficult climatic conditions. From poor, porous soil formed by volcanic activity and composed largely of pumice, Gaia harvests fully mature grapes with a relatively high acidity. Their vineyard, located on the Southeastern slopes of Episkopi is composed entirely of 70-80 year old, ungrafted vines with a dramatically low yield.
THALASSITIS is a bone-dry wine with a delicate honeysuckle aroma and a crisp finish… a white wine of a strong personality.
